I’ve been back from my Italian vacation for over a week, and I’ve spent a good amount of time talking about my trip with friends and family. Max and I loved our time in Italy, especially the week we stayed in Venice. When I tell people this, I get a mixed bag of [...]

Chilled Velvety Corn Soup with Tomato and Basil
Posted in Recipes-Soups on June 26, 2007 | 5 Comments »
I adore corn. When cooked with milk or cream, it’s divine. In fact, we used to make corn ice cream when I worked at Absinthe Brasserie, and it was absolutely magical. (It reappears on the menu every so often, so keep your eyes peeled.)
I’ve brought my love of corn and cream to [...]
Charles Chocolates Extravaganza

Yesterday I attended the launch party of Charles Chocolates’ new factory store and cafe in Emeryville. You may have seen Charles Chocolates’ chocolate bars and chocolate-covered nuts in high-end supermarkets in the Bay Area, but what you might not know is that CC also has a delicious line of filled chocolates that, until now, [...]
The Passing of a Friend

I received some very sad news today. There was a terrible train accident in Oakland on Tuesday afternoon, and my friend Lucie Buchbinder was struck and killed. I had heard about the accident on the news, but had no idea that the unidentified victim was my friend.
For those of you who don’t know [...]
The Art of Rome

I’ve been up since 3:00am, which is an improvement from yesterday’s 2:30am internal wake-up call. The jetlag is killing me for the most part, but it does have its perks. I’m gaining precious morning hours, despite the fact that I’m losing several on the other end.
I’m back in San Francisco, where the drivers [...]

After almost 20 hours of traveling yesterday, we finally made it home from our overseas trip to ROME…
…and VENICE
Needless to say, we had a fantastic time! More to come soon, once I unpack and get re-oriented.

Spiced Couscous and Chickpea Salad
Posted in Recipes-grains on June 5, 2007 | No Comments »
This is a light, healthy side dish that complements grilled salmon or chicken. For a vegetarian entrée, increase the amount of chickpeas to two cups and serve with roasted or grilled vegetables.
Spiced Couscous and Chickpea Salad
2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
6 medium garlic cloves, minced
2 teaspoons ground coriander
1 ½ teaspoons ground cumin
¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
¾ [...]
Serious Italian

I just love a cookbook that starts with a page like this. The book is entitled “The Silver Spoon” or, what I like to call, Italy’s version of “The Joy of Cooking.” It’s the newest member of my cookbook collection.
I did a little cookbook swap the other day and took a trip over [...]
A Gift

I have a new gift.
It’s a dainty little bowl
with scalloped edges…
…cartoon-like flowers…
…and graceful stems.
Thank you, Max.
